But if we look at the pile of ashes and the sheet of analytical percentages, is the beauty of the orchid explained? No, even though all the physical components are in the ashes.
There is a mysterious something that is combined with the atoms that make an orchid to give it its life and beauty. Similarly, a chemical analysis of the pigments in the paints used in the Mona Lisa does not explain the painting. In the case of the Mona Lisa, the creative intellect of DaVinci is that extra element. In the case of the orchid, there is something in addition to the parts and pieces as well.
The characteristics of the whole that cannot be explained by summing up the parts are called the holistic characteristics. Recognizing that extra element in life and food beyond the physical parts - called the holistic qualities - is critical in understanding how to achieve health, prevent disease, reverse disease, and choose foods.
Your pet cannot be explained by its atoms. Nor can its natural food. Both your pet and the food it is designed to eat are living entities. Life is simply not reducible to atoms.
The takeaway from this is respect. There are qualities in living creatures and the living food they are designed to eat that are not explained by the chemical percentages in either.
That's largely why the trillion and a half dollar modern medical approach of analyzing body parts, naming diseases, treating symptoms allopathically, and managing lab numbers fails. That is why trying to achieve the best per food by nutrient percentages does not work either.
Your pet is a whole creature, not an assemblage of parts. To achieve health - to maintain the holistic quality of that thing we call life, and the beauty of your pet's health - we must respect the natural order for the fathomless things we simply do not know or understand.
Things humans make and that are found in nature contain qualities that are not reducible to the component parts. Pets are creatures that possess a holistic feature called life. To properly maintain that life, natural holistic foods are required.
