You might say, "But won't bones get caught in their throat?" And I say, "How did dogs and cats survive in the wild for eons?" They ate raw bones and meat exclusively.
Raw bones also provide important elements including minerals, protein, fats, proteoglycans, collagen, vitamins, and enzymes in perfect proportions, exactly as nature intended. This is not to mention the exercise and entertainment pets enjoy from bone gnawing and chewing.
A Caution: Don't feed smaller cut bones such as from beef and pork which can be consumed too rapidly and may lodge in and around teeth. Moderation is the key. Excess bones (particularly if cooked) can cause severe constipation if suddenly introduced into the diet. An animal's natural eagerness for their natural food can cause them to overdo it.
Once a regular part of the diet, raw bone consumption will be self-regulating. Begin slowly. Offer fresh raw bones regularly. Start kittens and puppies right out on them. This feeding practice can yield big dental and overall health dividends and greatly add to your pet's enjoyment. Bones can also help prevent boredom... and might even save some furniture and woodwork.
Thought for the day: Natural law works the same on all creatures and is oblivious to human beliefs.
Word for the day: vegan - noun: a diet that excludes all foods and products that are wholly or partly derived from animals. This is in contrast to vegetarians of different sorts who may include eggs and dairy since these foods do not directly result in the killing of animals. Veganism is only possible using the products of modern agriculture and is thus arguably an unnatural and unhealthy diet for creatures that are naturally carnivores and omnivores. Although veganism emerges from the deepest longings for a humane and just world, it must ignore that in order for one creature to live another must die, forgive the death and eradication of the wild autochthonous biota that modern agriculture causes, and must conclude that humans and other animals most like us are more alive and worthy of staying that way than all other life forms.
