Pets are basically carnivores. In the wild they would naturally eat the best pet food: prey, carrion, and a bit of fresh vegetable matter here and there. When they eat their herbivore prey, they also get a little vegetable matter as part of the viscera. But the main components of their diets are meat, organs, and bones in their raw state. That is what they are designed for, that is the best pet food, and that is how they will enjoy best health.
One of the surest ways to sort out what the natural diet is for any species is to watch them in the wild. Real foods are those the creature can consume and digest as is. For herbivores it is vegetation, for carnivores it is prey.
Granted we cannot turn our pets loose in the wild to eat their natural diet. But we can do our best to emulate what they are designed for.
Understanding proper nutrition is as simple as watching what creatures eat in the wild. It has nothing to do with experiments, percentages, analyses, regulations, or finding the perfect complete processed food.
